We will meet at Retkietappi, in Juuma, where we will gear up and the adventure will begin. We will start the adventure by conquering the Niskakoski rapid. According to the international rapid rating system, Niskakoski is a Class II rapid. Below Niskakoski opens the wildest stretch of our adventure! The Myllykoski rapid (III-IV) starts with a waterfall and there is a 5-metre drop over the next 50 metres, so there will be plenty of splashes ahead!
After Myllykoski we will shoot down the biggest rapid of our trip. It is time for the famous one: Aallokkokoski! The drop over this almost 900-metre long Class IV rapid is 21 metres, so prepare for some high-speed rapid shooting! All paddlers will work as a team to cut through the haystack waves typical for Aallokkokoski. After the conquest of this wild rapid, the feeling of success is wonderful!
We will pass the Jyrävä waterfall on foot and move downstream to watch the journey of the ghost boat down the foaming rapid. From the shore it is great to witness the power of the water in the fall.
From Jyrävä, our Great Whitewater Rafting Adventure will continue towards Harrisuvanto. We will shoot down several long Class I-II rapids, leisurely in a relaxing atmosphere. Here, the lower part of River Kitkajoki meanders through steep gorges and the rapids are quite long. We will take our time, float on downstream along River Kitkajoki and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.
After three kilometres of rapid shooting we will stop at Harrisuvanto for a picnic lunch. We will make some campfire coffee and glow-fry sausages in the fire. After the break we will carry on for two kilometres to Pähkänä.
At Pähkänä we will hike up to the Pähkänäkallio cliff. If you want, we will stop to admire one of Kuusamo’s most picturesque places, Pähkänäkallio cliff, from where we will continue our journey towards the car. The total distance of the hike is about one kilometre, but it includes a steep climb – participating in the hike requires reasonable physical fitness. Transport by car back to the starting point.
